Vienna at the art historical forefront again!!!

In the most recent Le Magazine des Encheres I came across an article describing how the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna in the course of an auction of their Old Masters painting of May 5th 2023 did research on a painting originally attributed to Bernado Cavalino, one of Artemisia Gentileschi’s assistants.

The painting known as Abraham et les trois anges sold at auction in 2014 as painting by Bernado Cavalino in a post auction sale.

In their most recent catalogue the Dorotheum now attributed the Abraham painting to Artemesia Gentileschi (1593-1654) and to one of her assistants Onofrio Palumbo (1606-circa  1656).

I tried to find  a sales price for the painting lot 44 and it was not listed under results…perhaps bought in or a post-auction deal was accomplished.  The most expensive Gentelischi painting – a painting of Danae- sold to the Getty Museum in 2016 for $ 30.5.

Here is the link to the article I found in English on Artnet News.
